School

Honouring and building upon the strengths and passions of every student sits at the heart of all we do at Brighton High School. Engaged learners are more optimistic about their future, have higher levels of wellbeing, and contribute more to their communities. Our purpose-built learning environment accelerates engagement through hands-on, sophisticated, real-world learning.

We strive to educate young people who thrive in turbulent and complex times, apply thinking to new situations, and change their world. Engaging learning for adolescents spans the boundaries of traditional school subjects and connects students to ideas that inspire and confound them and issues that they care deeply about.

Developing the dispositions for learning – grit, curiosity, empathy, focus, teamwork - guarantees our young people know how to learn. A focus on the essential skills of reading, writing and number through all learning and all years, ensure our young people have the foundational skills to pave their chosen life path within or beyond their local community.

Our educators are passionate and skilled in nurturing collaboration with families and agency for our students. It is through these full, equal and equitable learning partnerships we nurture and motivate curious, optimistic, skilled and compassionate young people.

Acknowledgment of Country

Brighton High School pays its respects to the traditional and original owners of the land upon which we work, the Palawa people. We pay respect to Elders past and present and acknowledge today’s Tasmanian Aboriginal community as the enduring custodians of the lands, seas, sky, and waterways of lutruwita/Tasmania.

We value the history, culture and strength of the Tasmanian Aboriginal community. We commit to listen deeply to Story and to be respectful of Country in our collaborations with First Peoples.

Cultural Foundations

Our school was created through the advocacy of our community. Our ethos statement, ‘where the aspirations of our community thrive’ acknowledges our community champions, holds us to the hope our families entrust in us, and signals the essential reciprocal partnership between school and community in educating our young people.

The Big Rocks upon which our school has been built are Strong Community, Deep Learning and High Expectations. All that we do connects back to these foundations.

At Brighton High School, the beliefs we hold about our learners shape our decision making.

School Improvement

At Brighton High School we strive for growth for every learner, in every class. School improvement is the work of all in our school community. The research is clear about the strong links between family engagement, expert teaching, quality leadership and student achievement and growth.

The highest performing schools and school systems support expert teaching and family engagement through clearly articulating a strategic direction, and co-constructing the map for teachers, leaders and community to improve.

Family Engagement

At Brighton High School we elevate the dual role of educators and family to ensure high levels of learning for every child, every day. Families hold a deep knowledge and understanding of their child, and our educators hold a deep knowledge and understanding of learning – a powerful and essential partnership. The research is clear: students learn better when families are alongside them in their learning.

Inspiring spaces

Our built environment acknowledges the Palawa people as the original and ongoing custodians of the land upon which our school continues the education that has been present in this place since ancient times. Leading-edge technology and environmental design inspire educators to teach in collaborative and innovative ways and motivate students to be creative and critical thinkers. Driven by Universal Design for Learning principles, we are an inclusive, accessible and welcoming gathering place that all community members can be proud of.

Employment

Brighton High School offers a vibrant, engaging and supportive staff culture. Our educators and staff have a deep commitment to each young person in our school, an enthusiasm for their specialisation, and a zest for the challenging work of educating teenagers. We know that we are better together, and work as a collaborative team of adult learners to quality-assure our practice.
